Doo-doo-doo-de-doo…K9!!!

The BBC has finally confirmed what many of us knew all along: K9 is returning along with Sarah Jane to Doctor Who

I for one am thrilled that both Sarah and K9 are going to be in an episode of the new series. I’m all for the new show staying new and all and not getting up its own arse over continuity and such, but a show with a rich history and heritage like Doctor Who can afford to, occasionally, acknowledge that glorious past. Sarah Jane and K9 are two things about that past that the average member of the public who watched the original series will no doubt remember. They’re arguably two of the most popular Doctor Who companions ever—certainly the only ones to have, between them, their own spinoff TV pilot, along with spawning pop songs, appearances on Queer as Folk and a gen-x romance novel.

Will the Mill give K9 some cool new effects? Will kids fall in love with the metal pooch like kids in 1978 did? These are good questions and I will absolutely watching the Doctor, Rose, Mickey, K9 and Sarah Jane Smith take on the evil Krillitanes come next spring to find out the answers. But based on last season, I feel a team that has been so sure-footed in bringing back Doctor Who and the Daleks will be equally adroit with Sarah and K9. Affirmatively so.

So I guess this makes the Sarah Jane Smith audios officially not canon. smile

a talking robot dog?  forgive me, but this is the first thing i’ve heard about the new series that makes me wonder if it’ll be as good as the eccleston series.  can you say ‘merchandising tie-in’?

As far as I’m concerned, RTD can do whatever the hell he likes. If he wants to bring back SJS and K-9, let him. He’s certainly earned my admiration and trust. Series 2 will kick ass, trust me smile

Does this mean that the events in the Decalog 3: Consequences short story ‘Moving On’ will be ignored? Holy, retcon!

I am happy to see that K-9 Mark III will be onscreen with the Doctor for the first time. Well, not including that Find Your Fate book with the Sixth Doctor…

The talking robot dog was a part of the original series for nearly 4 years when it was at the height of its popularity. And as it’s no more improbable than the daleks, which were successfully resurrected. I have no doubt it’s going to be an amusing and entertaining episode.

It sounds like the episode with Sarah Jane and K9 is intended to be the ‘blockbuster’ episode of the 2nd season just like the Dalek episode of the 1st. The BBC site also mentioned that the same episode will have Anthony Head in it. All the episode needs now is an appearance by The Master and for the Doctor to solve everything by ‘reversing the neutron flow’ and they’ll have succeeded in their design of the ultimate episode.

I completely agree with Graeme re. involving bits and pieces of the old series. Doctor Who has enough history in it that the writers of the show, if they’re clever (and we know they are), can make sublime references to the past without putting off new viewers. Like the Doctor’s references to the Time Lords fixing things in ‘Father’s Day’ (as in The War Games of 2nd Doc’s time). Or the slightly more obvious cyberman head in ‘Dalek’. The comments he makes to the cat in ‘The Empty Child’ made me smile as well.
