Christopher Eccleston is the new Doctor Who!

The casting of Eccleston comes as a surprise—he was not among the popularly touted contenders for the role (he wasn’t even listed amongst the choices in the DWIN website poll!).

Eccleston is a highly regarded actor for a variety of roles, most recently as the Manchester born incarnation of the son of God in The Second Coming, which was written by Doctor Who‘s new writer/producer Russell T. Davies.
