Reality Bomb Episode 003

On the third edition of Reality Bomb, Alex Kennard presents a feature documentary on the first time fans watched Doctor Who. Graeme Burk interviews Who Party Toronto‘s Mike Doran about Peter Capaldi’s not-so-secret past as a Doctor Who fan and chats with Cameron Dixon about the fanzine Enlightenment‘s change to digital format. The Beast Below is our first entry in our Gallery of the Underrated and Jon Arnold explains to Graeme why that is. And Lori Stueart expounds on what the feels are. All this and we look at the rumour about dubbing the Doctor for Canadian audiences!

Talk about an episode of feels! From Lori’s segment forcing listeners to relive Donna’s “death” to remember the magic of the first time we say Doctor Who and finally the story of how personally the important the Invasion of Time is to one. Even the Canuck Doctor gave me the feels…a horrified what-if feeling but still! The episode really showed that Reality Bomb has hit it’s stride and left me wanting more. At least I have that other Canadian DW podcast to get me through the next month.

It’s too bad that there wasn’t enough time to mention the Time-Life broadcasts of Doctor Who in the US in the 1970’s.  These had special voice over introductions by actor Howard de Silva to try to explain things to the audience.  I first came across Doctor Who in the late 1970’s via one of these broadcasts of “Genesis of the Daleks” on Channel 9, an independent station in New York, and remember being totally creeped out by Davros and his dangling hand.  I wasn’t hooked on the show permanently until several years later when I watched “Pyramids of Mars” on the PBS station in Connecticut while going to school there (studying Egyptology, no less), but that first time watching the Doctor and Davros is still burned into my memory.
