Last Calls for Season 27….

05.jpg

Tonight’s the night the final episode of the 27th Season (or “Series One” as it also called) of Doctor Who is broadcast on the CBC.  Its been a wonderful season and a triumphant return for Doctor Who, in the fashion we all knew could happen if the BBC did things right.

Tell us what you thought about tonight’s episode, the season as a whole, the 9th Doctor, Rose, Captain Jack, Mickey, Jackie or any character from the new series.

Readers who haven’t seen The Parting of the Ways or the whole season should be warned that there will likely be spoilers in the comments posted!

Jack is one of the coolest characters. And his inclusion highlights what is special about the Doctor and Rose’s relationship.

But why does he call himself Captain? Is he trying to show off?

FFS, It’s SERIES ONE !!!!

Series 27 never happened….

Posted by John Rambo  on  06/28  at  04:17 PM

Well since there are supposed to be spoilers I better post some.

The shock return of Tom Baker was stunning. The way he appeared as a past Doctor spirit to Rose was a cool stroke. Of course he didn’t identify himself as such so as to keep things a surprise for Rose later on but still it was done well. I do think it was a bit much when the Timelords showed up.It was typical of them though to make the Doctor think he wiped them out when really it was a masterplan of Rassilon all the time. The way he just showed up at the end and wiped the Daleks away with the wave of a hand. I mean really what kind of ending is that?

Sorry Rambo, but I didn’t see anybody claiming that “Series 27” had ever happened or using that term. It is however the 27th season of Doctor Who - all you have to do is count the seasons and you’ll get there. I also mentioned that it is known as Series One. I don’t see what the big deal is.

But please, let us not turn this comments thread into a pedantic debate about what to call the 2005 season. Its been a fantastic season in my opinion, regardless of whatever fans wish to call it.

I’d like to call the 2005 season…BOB.

i cant believe that they r going to change the drs. chris was amazing and I hope he returns.

I have a question. Please excuse my ignorance, I’ve only been watching the show this season, kinda hard to experience something that happens before you were born. I was wondering, does the Doctor completely change after Chris turns to Tennant, or will he be pretty much the same Doctor?

Posted by Geoff  on  06/29  at  01:13 AM

Geoff, nice to hear from a new fan. The Doctor’s basic character and principles typically stay the same after a regeneration. The portrayal of the character is usually somewhat different - some Doctors might be more prone to humour, or tetchiness, or arrogance etc. than others.

Ryan…What episode did you just see?  Are you making stuff up?  I didn’t see any of the things you mentioned in this episode, especially not Tom Baker!

As for the season.  Great job to the entire team!  Only wish the season lasted longer than 13 episodes.  Just when I got my daughter into the show, it ends.

Hey!! I’m a new fan too it’s the first season I watch Doctor Who (I love this show) ... Is there a DVD set of the other seasons ?? Or some way to watch the old Doctor WHo’s?? Because if there is I would like too very much

Wow!  I’ve been raving like mad to anyone who would listen since the show ended.  I’ve only gotten into Dr. Who this season, but am absolutely amazed.  The last episode especially I found so emotional and heart breaking.  And Hooray for Captain Jack… who calls is called that because he was impersonating an Air Force pilot when the Dr. and Rose first met him, to the person who asked.

Nice to see all the fans, thanks for the info about Billie Piper coming back, I was so sad to think that she wouldn’t…

I am 50 yrs old. I watched my first Dr. Who episode when I was a young child in Cardiff. I have shown my kids episodes whenever I could. I remember the Daleks scaring the crap out of me, (read EXTERMINATE!!) and all those old feelings came flooding back tonight. It was riveting and I can only hope the Beeb carries on in this same vein. Long Live the Doctor.

Can we maybe trade Piper for a new Rose and keep Eccelston instead?
I dunno about this new guy, he’s not very attractive.

(And for all the folks that keep asking, the old Dr. Who shows are available on amazon.com and other sites like it.)

Did anybody catch how many languages the Doctor claimed to speak?

Posted by Cucullin  on  06/29  at  02:32 AM

It was 5 billion languages

Posted by Véronique  on  06/29  at  02:41 AM

Hey, thanks to Veronique for the answer to Cucullin’s question of how many languages the Doctor claims to speak…it’s the very reason why I was on the internet doing a search on the Doctor.

By the way, I am a newbie to Doctor Who (watched it for the first time this season), and I must say I really enjoyed it! I’m looking forward to the next season, and I hope to watch some of the earlier Doctor Who shows as well.

I have been watching Doctor Who for 20 plus years and its always hard when you really get in to the Doctors character and then he changes. My favorit Doctor was Tom Backer and great hat and scarf.

I very much enjoyed the new season, which, yes, I’ve also been referring to as “Season 27.” Why not?

I liked it, but next season I’d like to see some episodes away from Earth. I know RTD has professed a distaste for Doctor Who as SF, but I’d enjoy some good alien planets with an occasional SF-emphasis story rather than “horror.”

I wasn’t all that fond of Jack or some of the character interaction, but I was willing to go with it and I did enjoy where it all went. I must admit, I gave a cheer at David Tennent’s first line…and then heaved a sigh a moment later when I realized how long it was until Christmas….or whenever the CBC gets the special.

So, season of ups and downs, mostly ups. It wasn’t perfect, but I was very satisfied. grin

It was a great episode and a great season.  My wife came round to liking the new series, she was always a little aloof to the old series.
She was blubbering away last night, bless her…

I know he’s “Captain Jack” because he was impersonating a Captain, but it was a disguise! He is not actually a Captain. Why does he call himself “Captain” in Boom Town? Who’s he trying to impress?

Anyway I love this season, I think it’s better than the old show.

Veronique, there is a DVD set of Doctor Who’s 16th Season out in North America, commonly referred to as “The Key To Time” - its 6 discs, and feature five 90 minute stories and one 2 hour and 15 minute story which concludes the season (they used to make 26 half-hour episodes in those days, as opposed to 13 hour long episodes that they do today).

Otherwise, there are a bunch of other stories being released from various seasons and various Doctors. The BBC typically don’t release season-length box sets for classic Who preferring a slower release rate of individual stories & packing each release with as many extras as possible (with the Key to Time set doesn’t have as much of). However, when the new series is released here (sometime in 2006 I expect) it will be released in a a box set complete with lots of extras.

Amazon.ca has them on-line, while you can usually find them at Best Buy or Future Shop as well.

I was very disappointed to hear that Eccelston wouldn’t be coming back for next season but I think I like the look of the new Doctor too.  Both actors share that ‘quirky’ kinda look - not gorgeous, not ugly, just somewhere comfortably in between.  Sigh… I can’t wait til next season!

DOCTOR WHO (BBC, 1963-1989) Seasons 1-26

DOCTOR WHO (FOX, 1996) ?

DOCTOR WHO (BBC WHALES, 2005-?) Seasons 1-?

THERE IS NO SEASON 27 (yet!)

Did you count the Star Trek episodes produced in 1987 as Season 4 of STAR TREK?

Posted by John Rambo  on  06/29  at  03:52 PM

No, John, because its official title was Star Trek: the Next Generation, not Star Trek. Doctor Who hasn’t changed its name. It can be seen as a direct continuation, whereas Trek specifically distanced itself from the original series.

Look, RTD has said it could be referred to as either “Series 27” or “Series 1,” depending on how you feel about it. I really think you need to relax about this and just accept that people might feel differently than you do. Unless, of course, you’re honestly trolling.
