Hey look it’s another comparison!
These ninth Doctor book covers look quite surprising at first, since we’ve had no other covers like them. Lots of fans hate them. I’m not sure why, because no way are they the worst covers we’ve had.
To put these covers in perspective, look at one next to a Buffy book. They look quite similar. And that’s good because they are aimed at the audience that reads TV tie-in novels that look like this.
Lets hope they will be distributed properly in North America, and put on the shelves right next to the Buffy and Stargate books. Purely for marketing purposes - they will of course be much better than those other books.

I’ve always liked photographic covers, and indeed I think these look fine. Though any cover with Billie Piper on it makes me a little biased. And I am wondering what the properties of the new sonic screwdriver are given that Eccleston keeps wielding it in these photo’s like its a weapon.

The covers look glossy and streamlined but they don’t look very suited to an adult audience I thought.
They remind of those Peterson Target Novelisations where they did some photo stuff on the covers. These new ones look too alike with similiar poses by the Doctor/Companion. I think if they just had the artwork it would look much better.
However I could see a younger me going crazy over these

What bothers me about the covers is that every shot of the Doctor and Rose looks so similar. It’s as if they took a ton of publicity shots in five minutes and that is what will appear on every cover of every book associated with the series. I mean even the Monsters and Villains book has a similar pose from the Doctor and Rose. Couldn’t they at least change up Rose’s wardrobe a bit - rather than just recolour the same shirt?

The covers don’t look suited to an adult audience because the books aren’t going to be written for one. Or so they say.

I find it more funny that you identify Hummer as the worst cover. Admittedly, it has the image of a Seventh Doctor either breakdancing or in the midst of a seizure of some sort, but while books like Coldheart and To The Slaughter exist I think there are less worthy contenders.

Left-Handed Hummingbird looks completely embarrassing and amateurish. At least To The Slaughter looks like it was created by an artist, even if it is boring.

The obvious question is if they think that these covers are so good for sales(they’re fine by me). Then why didn’t they start doing this years ago when the sales have apparently slipped?

Ryan: Because a) it’s another design company entirely and b) there isn’t a new TV series to draw a stream of new images from, I suspect.
John: Hummer doesn’t look any more amateurish than what the NAs were doing at the time—ie. Highest Science, Time’s Crucible, Shadowmind, Witchmark, repeat to fade…
