News about Christmas Carol DVD/BD; also, new Sixth Doctor stories

image
If you’re like me, you probably try to avoid double-dipping with DVD and Blu-ray releases. Especially with something like recent Doctor Who, you can be pretty certain that if it gets released by itself, it’ll later show up in a box set. (Case in point, the 2009 specials.)

According to a recent report by the TV Shows on DVD news site, however, this might not be the case with next week’s release of A Christmas Carol. The DVD/Blu-ray release is to include as added features the Doctor Who Confidential on the making of the show, plus last summer’s Doctor Who at the Proms concert, which was hosted by the trio of Smith-Gillan-Darvill and featured a live performance by Matt Smith as the Doctor in a special skit. According to TV Shows on DVD, a BBC America spokesperson says “not all” of the special features will be included on the eventual Season 6 box set. So there’s a 50-50 chance either the concert or the Confidential will remain exclusive to this separate release (unless 2 Entertain changes its mind, of course!).

My money’s on the concert being dropped, especially if they decide to release the two halves of Series 6 separately. So if you’re like me and enjoy the extras, it might be time to brace for a double-dip. Luckily it doesn’t appear as if A Christmas Carol will be overpriced the way Dreamland was. Amazon Canada lists the DVD at $18.74 and the Blu-ray actually a little cheaper for once at $17.49. Both are due for release on Feb. 15. Nothing like a little Christmas to brighten up your Valentine’s Day hangover!

Meanwhile, Hirst Publishing, a UK publisher, has announced that Michael Troughton is writing a biography of his dad, Patrick Troughton for release later in the year. When I went to check Hirst’s website for more about this, I learned that sometime early this year (the site says it was actually out in January but I don’t know if it’s actually available yet as pre-orders apparently help fund these books), Colin Baker is publishing his first collection of short stories, Gallimaufry. That in itself is cool enough. But according to the promotional material on the website, the book contains three Sixth Doctor short stories by Baker. This isn’t the first time Baker has written short fiction about his Doctor - he contributed to Short Trips and some charity publications, and he also wrote the comic book series The Age of Chaos back in the 1990s. This is the first time we’ve seen any “past Doctor” fiction published in print since Big Finish ended its Short Trips books in 2009 (later to revive the line as an audio series).

Check out Hirst’s webpage here for details on both books, as well as a number of other Who-related releases, including autobiographies by Anneke Wills (Polly), Matthew Waterhouse (Adric) and Daphne Ashbrook (Grace), as well as collections of newspaper columns by Baker. (Update Feb. 14) Apparently (according to some references seen via Google), Hirst may also be publishing a biography of Anthony Ainley soon, too, but I can’t find a listing on Hirst’s website.

I didn’t actually enjoy the Christmas Carol that much and so I won’t be shelling out for it this month. I do however hope that it is included on a complete Series 6 box-set, so that I get a chance to change my mind. smile
I’m not worried though about missing out on the extras; I don’t usually watch the Confidential videos more than once as they’re not terribly informative about anything really. I also listen to a lot of classical music, but a Doctor Who themed prom isn’t my cub of tea really…
My difficulty will probably lie in deciding whether to buy box sets ‘6a’ and ‘6b’ or wait until Christmas(?) to purchase the final compilation set.

@Andrew B. That TV Shows on DVD report confirms the special will be in the box set.

The Confidential was quite good because it provides a behind-the-scenes look at, among other things, the recording of Kathleen Jenkins’ song, which is extraordinary. It’s a shame the soundtrack CD isn’t being released until March because the Doctor Who people missed a bet on possibly scoring a holiday season chart hit (Jenkins is an unknown in North America but in the UK she’s the classical music equivalent of Kylie Minogue). The Prom concert was a lot of fun and looks fantastic in HD. Matt Smith’s audience participation skit has him channelling Troughton the whole time and the “This is Gallifrey” sequence sends shivers down my spine!

I bought my copy Tuesday night at best buy for the very suprising price of only $11 and change. Haven’t had a chance to watch the special features yet but they sound interesting. As for the epsiode itself, am I the only one who found it…wellll….not very good?

I thought the episode was great, personally, second only to the feature film-worthy Voyage of the Damned as my favorite Christmas special. But every Christmas special has received mixed reviews because (End of Time not counted) they tend to be a bit more fanciful than the average. I’d like to find your Best Buy. Mine here in Calgary charged me $17 for the Blu-ray, which is still better than the $25 or so that I had to pay for Dreamland last fall!

@Alex: I’m glad you’re enjoying the new CC package. I only meant to say that (for me) “the extras” don’t (or won’t)really motivate me to pick up multiple versions of the same Doctor Who stories.

@Doug: As I wrote, I really didn’t enjoy the Christmas Carol. Individual bits (like when Kazran saw his life’s story alter as he watched a video of himself meeting the Doctor) were very nicely done, but overall I felt the total was less than the sum of its parts.
Then again I watched the show via the Space web-site, which after purchasing the Series 5 box-set, I now realize is less than optimal. Amazingly, I’ve discovered that I really like The Victory of the Daleks.
I will say though, that $11 is a really nice price which could (on a good day) persuade me to double DVD dip.

Just a note. That $11.00 was for the regualr DVD. I have yet to go into Blu-Ray mode. I think the Blu-Ray DVD at my Best Buy was just $17 and change.
